Keeping Track of Lauren & Jack

December 2005

Yesterday while at the playground Lauren learned some serious climbing, up a ladder type thing and also a thing that looks like a big net. She's completely fearless! She also went up the stairs (standing up, holding onto the railing!), through the tunnel, and down the spiral slide about a hundred times. She was also trying to keep up with the other big girls who were all going down the slide together as a train, screaming "CHOO CHOO!"

Today I heard Jack sounding sort of alarmed while he was napping and I arrived to see that he had rolled over! He had rolled over before but it always seemed like an accident. I think it scared him because he was not happy to be on his belly. That's the problem with belly time, he just screams and screams. He might be one of those kids who never crawls and goes right to pulling up. Fine by me, the longer he stays where I put him the better!

Things are much better with me, so that's a relief. I think there was an infection which was why it was so painful to nurse.

We had a play date today with our neighbor Allison and her daughter Taylor who is around the same age as Lauren. She got a bunch of cool toys for Christmas, one of which was this huge tunnel contraption that you run air through. It was so funny to see them crawling around in there, Lauren LOVED it!

So the doctor has now prescribed ME with antibiotics to see if that will help. I'll take them for 48 hours and then go back again. I really hope they help.

On our walk today to the playground in our community,(it's quite a handful with the double stroller AND the dog) Lauren accosted every single person we saw with a very loud "HI!!" and hand waving, followed by "BA-BYE!!" and even more vigouros hand waving. It's nice to see her learning how to socialize, but it really cracks me up at how emphatic she is!

Jack did his best to grab his sisters hair from behind, and he has a STRONG grip! I'm surpirsed it doesn't upset her more. But then he very conveniently fell asleep so I could play with Lauren on the swings and slides without him feeling too neglected. Sometimes it just works out that way.

Lauren's rash seems to have improved a lot, so we got a prescription for a different kind of antibiotic without penicillin. It's not easy getting her to take it. Mike has to run around after her with a syringe!

I'm having some breastfeeding problems, which is a bit unexpected at this point, six months in. I'm very sore on my left side so I'm going to see the doctor tomorrow. I called La Leche League and they were very helpful. It's so painful that I can't nurse on that side at all, so I've been pumping. The upside is that tonight for the first time Jack drank from the bottle for me! He resisted pretty strongly at first, but he eventually drank most of the bottle and then fell fast asleep.

I went to Babies R Us today to look for something called a breast shell, and of course bought a whole bunch of other things. I stocked up on some supplies and of course couldn't resist the clothes! I got some cute shoes on sale for Jack. It's hard to find crib shoes with soft soles in his size. That's becuase he's the size of boys twice his age who are usually walking by then! I thought that it would be easier to resist shopping for boys clothes, but who was I kidding?!

Today wasn't fun as Lauren has developed a slight rash over her entire body that we suspect is an allergic reaction to the penicillin in her anti-biotics for her ear infection. So now we're trying Benedryl and we'll try to see the doctor in the morning.

Jack continues to be a challenge to feed his baby food. He doesn't seem to like cereal at all, and barely tolerates the vegetables. Maybe next week we'll try a fruit and see if we can win him over.

Merry Christmas to all! We survived today somehow, despite Lauren's intermittent crankiness due to an ear infection and Jack's unwillingness to nap.

My images of gleeful ripping open presents was tarnished by the fact that Lauren was hungry so we decided to feed her breakfast first. Then Mike was trying to videotape and I was trying to take photos, which didn't leave arms for holding Jack and he started to feel neglected! Lauren didn't really get into the unwrapping thing, which meant we were essentially doing it for her, which was oddly dissapointing. She also wanted to play with each thing as we unwrapped it, and even though we would spend about 10 minutes per gift, we were still oviously rushing her! Yes, it did take quite a while. There was such a nice variety of gifts; toys, games, books, clothes. Thanks to the many of you who sent packages, they are truly appreciated.

Our big gift for the kids was a big red wagon which we were hoping to take outside and pull them around the cul-de-sac, but it was sort of blustry out there, so we were confined indoors. Oh well, this is Florida, it's bound to be sunny tomorrow!

Hi, Lisa here. Merry Christmas! I am so excited to have our own site! Mike and I broke down and exchanged gifts this evening since both babies are asleep. The rationale is that then we can concentrate on the kids opening their gifts in the morning. (Hey, I'll rationalize it somehow!) I will spend some time tonight trying to figure this site out, so I can update it as often as possible. Our local TV news station has a broadcast of a wood fire burning in a fireplace with holiday music playing. . .So sad that we don't have a real fire, instead have to have one coming through the TV! I guess Santa won't get down the virtual firplace. Mike has put together the big red wagon which is Lauren and Jack's big present and we've filled it with their other gifts. More tomorrow!
