Keeping Track of Lauren & Jack

March 2006

Well, we survived somehow through the weekend. I went to help paint sets for my show on Saturday. I also had a rehearsal for a song I'm singing at the "Taste of New Tampa" next weekend. But we were glad for Mike's return on Sunday. He brought Jack the cutest little noisemaker, and Lauren got a necklace which of course she refused to wear until she saw me wearing it around a little!

Monday I had my car fixed so Mike had the kids for the morning. I figured he owed me that much after being away for 5 days! I stopped by BabiesRUs on my way home and couldn't resist the cutest little armchair for Lauren. It looks like a miniature version of her daddy's leather one. We needed a new one since her other chair got dirty and we can't seem to take the cover off to clean it.

Lauren actually said car (or something like it) yesterday instead of beep-beep. That's progress!
We went to Jack's playgroup yesterday and he was pulling up on every available surface.

Right now Jack is hysterically crying and refusing to nap, so that's all for now!

Yesterday we went to Lauren's playgroup and they had a playroom that was upstairs and Lauren spent most of the time climbing up and down the stairs. Since it was carpeted I just let her go at it, standing nearby of course. It's so surprising sometimes seeing just what will amuse them. We don't have any stairs in our house,so to her it's just a big climbing adventure!

Another funny thing was Lauren getting down and crawling around with Jack, leading him from room to room. It's so cute when they play nicely together. It's rare, but it's cute!

Today Lauren saw her Ladybug Halloween costume in the closet and insisted on wearing it. I let her since we weren't going anywhere. Since it's a little chillier out today I put her in tights and a turtleneck underneath. Of coure this all happened AFTER I had her dressed in something else!

The house is a wreck. All I've accomplished all morning is one load of laundry. Oh well, everyone has been fed and napped and has clean diapers, so I consider that a success!

Mike is in Mexico for a conference, we took him to the airport yesterday. Boy it's challenging all by myself! Luckily we have Jennifer coming every day, or I would lose my mind!

Naps and eating have been much better, with the exception of yesterday going to the airport when we got all off schedule. Jack's separation anxiety seems to be peaking, which is a little alarming because my rehearsals are heating up in readiness of our opening next week. It's so difficult to leave on time becuase it's his bath/bedtime.

We went to a free Music Together class at our community center today, and I'm considering signing up for the class, but it starts next week already, so I need to make a decision soon! It was really fun! Lauren had a great time with the various instruments and really liked dancing around with all the scarves. The big surprise was how musical Jack is! He was shaking a rattle in tempo and rocking back and forth on all fours. He got into it!

But the sibling rivalry thing is rearing it's ugly head. Not only are they starting to wrestle, but Lauren gets very upset when Jack reaches for her stuff. She's epecially possesive of her sippy cups and her crayons. I think I may need to move his car seat too because right now he can reach over and grab her and vice versa. I used to think it was cute when I'd see them holding hands back there, but it's nowbecoming a tug of war!

I spent most of last week looking at preschools. The one I really like has a prettylong waitlist, and the others are full time. So I'm not sure what to do. There is one that has space and seems have nice facilities, but I heard that they have a lot of teacher turnover, and the class size and ratio is a little larger there. I'm considering registering her there so that we will have someplace even if the waitlist doesn't come through.

The weekend was a bit of a blur. All I got done was a little laundry. Otherwise we had date night Saturday which was fabulous. We went to a seafood restaurant we'd never been to before, and the food was great. Then we saw a musical which I'd always wanted to see, and I really enjoyed it.

Sunday we went for a nice family walk at a park down the road where there was a payground and swings. We even let Sadie run around. It's already getting a little hot to do that in the middle of the day. (Yikes!) Lauren was fascinated with the balance beam. Maybe we have a future gymnnast in out midst?

Jack seems to be learning what "NO!" means. The other day he was crawling toward the dog bowl which he seems to think is his own personal splashing puddle. I said, Jack, NO. And he stopped, looked at me for a few seconds, and then headed off in another direction. He actually listened to me!

Today Lauren seemed to be having allergies, she was sneezing, and her eyes and nose were running. It probably didn't help that we had the windows open all weekend to take advantage of the nice breezes. I gave her some Benadryl and that seemed to help a lot, although it made her a bit letharigic. I finally closed all the windows and put the a/c on, and I think that helped, keeping all the allergens out of the air in the house.

She also wouldn't eat much. There isn't a single thing anymore that I know she will definitley eat. All she had for lunch was applesauce, and she had an english muffin for a snack after her nap. And she refused to eat anything for dinner. Of course she kept asking for pudding, so apparently she's still got her appetite for sweets (hmm, I wonder where she gets that from?)

Potty Success! Lauren woke up from her nap with a dry diaper, so I asked her if she wanted to go potty and she said yes, so she happily sat on the potty for quite a few minutes. And when she got up I saw that she had peed! Yeah! We had lots of praise, gave her 2 stickers for her chart, and she also got 2 small treats. I'm hoping all our excitement will encourage a repeat performance!

Otherwise we went to the library for storytime this morning. It was a little challenging trying to hold onto Jack now that he's crawling, and he was also fussy due to his mere 30 minute morning nap. And Lauren would not sit and listen at all. She was dancing and twirling around all over the place. I think I need to try to go more often, so she could get used to focusing and listening.

And today's other excitement was going to pick up Lauren's new Stride Rite sneakers which are very snazzy. I had to order them in her size, and it took over a week for them to come in, but I think it was worth waiting becuase they have a lot of mesh and I thought they'd be cooler for her to play in than ones that are all leather. Wow, kids shoes are really expensive! Especially when they wear them for less than a year before they grow out of them!

Lauren's heart murmur turns out to be "innocent", according to the pediatric cardiologist. Apparently her heart is perfectly normal so the sound they are hearing my just be a normal vibration, and she'll probably grow out of it. What a relief!

I gave Jack his first haircut!! It was driving me crazy that his "Dr Phil" hair (as Mike calls it) was getting a little long over his ears and around the back, so I just trimmed it a little. It's much harder than I thought. the kid just won't sit still! I think next time I may leave it to the experts.

Lauren went to the potty and wanted to sit on it right AFTER she had pooped (in her diaper)the other day. I know that doens't sound like much, but she's making the connection and that's what's important! I just bought her a bunch of training paints, so we may give those a try on days when we're hanging out at home. I don't think I can handle her running around without anything on, which some books suggest!

We went to look at the Montessori Academy which seemed fine, but they're full time, and that's not what we want for this Fall. There's a few more options to look at, so I'm still hopeful we can get Lauren registered to start in August. If not, it's no big deal, I'll be home with Jack anyway. I just think she'll be ready for more social interaction and a little more stuctured learning environment. But certainly not all day, 5 days a week!

I've been doing more research about preschools for Lauren. I went to visit one that is close-by, and it seems OK, but it is also a daycare, which I have some concerns about. But at least there is a decent choice and they still have room, so I feel somewhat releived. I'm going to see two more next week, and there are two or three I'm still investigating. I can't believe I'm going through all this for PRESCHOOL!

Jack is now a crawling champion! He can crawl all the way from one end of the house to the other, and he's getting faster too. The cutest thing is when he hears my voice and starts heading in my direction. He gets the funniest little determined grin in his face! Once he arrives he uses my legs to pull up for a standing cuddle. It just makes my heart ache!

Lauren is entering DIVA territory. She will now wear hats and sunglasses, and even likes to carry a purse! It's all about the accessories dahling. . . Tonight she was streaking around naked before bathtime. I'm hoping that doesn't mean we have an exhibitionist in our midst! No-really, all I could think is how sweet and innocent she is, and how fleeting this stage really is. I mean she'll be going to SCHOOL soon for crying out loud!

We went to the Strawberry Festival in Plant City (30-45 minutes away) today. Our neighbor Allison's in-laws have a booth there selling semi-precious stones, so she invited us along. It's really like a carnival or state fair. There were very cute kiddie rides. Lauren loved the super slide, the bumper boats, the spinning dragon, and the flying helicoptor. I did take a few pics and will try to get them up on here soon.

We did have a lot of fun, but I almost lost my mind during lunch. Lauren insisted on eating her corn ON the cobb, which was fine but I had to hold it for her. At the same time I was trying to feed Jack some baby food, and in-between feed myself bites of all the things Lauren refused to even try.

I love the new stroller but the baskets are much smaller, so I have to learn to bring a lot less! It was also sort of hard to steer when the ground wasn't paved, which made me feel like I still need a jogging stroller with bigger wheels. It's ridiculous, I'm going to end up with 10 strollers and I'm not exaggerating!

Jack is teething again. I think he's getting his top ones next to the middle two. He also seems to have seperation anxiety, which I hear is normal at this age, but makes it hard to do just about anything, holding him on one hip! He's getting SOOO heavy. He did really well at his 9 month appointment yesterday. He cried less than a minute after his shots. What a trouper! His growing has slowed a little, but he's still in the 75th percentile.

I also took Lauren to the doctor yesterday to follow up on her ear infection and to re-check for her heart murmur. Her ears were fine, but the murmur is still there, so he's referring us to a pediatric cardiologist. I'm trying not to freak out. It doesn't have to mean anything serious. We'll see what the cardiologist says next week.

A funny thing happened at Lauren's playgroup on Friday. We met at a local playground that happens to be right next to an elementary school, and at one point the kindergarten class was out for recess. When they lined up to go back into the school, Lauren REALLY wanted to go with them! In fact, she cried and hung on the gate once they'd left. I take this as a good sign for her willingness to go to pre-school - which, by the way, I'm apparently already late registering for! Can you believe it? I have been doing some preliminary research. I think I'll call and get on their waiting lists, and then go check them out. I would like her to go for a half day, twice a week, starting in the Fall, provided she's potty trained by then. I just can't believe my BABY girl is going to go to school already! Yikes. When they say it goes fast, they aren't kidding!

Jack continues to sleep well through the night but he fights naps like his life depends on it. Today I think he napped a total of 35 minutes. Not good! It should be more like 3 hours! I think he's just so excited about crawling and pulling up to standing that he doesn't want to do slow down long enough to sleep. I hope it's just a phase. PLEASE let it be a phase!

Yesterday was a bit of a blur. After getting up at 6:30AM to feed Jack, I had to take Sadie to the vet for her dentistry appointment. Upon returning I ran around desperately trying to clean up (fruitless with the 2 year old tornado) before Jack's playgroup arrived at 10AM. It's sort of strange, because the babies range from 5 months to 20 months, so some aren't even sitting up yet, and some are walking/running/jumping. Luckily we have lots of toys for every stage! The pool full of balls was a big hit. Then there was lunch and naps and laundry, and then I had to go pick UP Sadie. Wow, her dentistry cost more than mine does! They have to put her under anesthesia, which is why it's so expensive. Anyway, before I knew it, it was time for me to leave for rehearsal. I just don't know where the time went.

Jack has been babbling Ma-ma! Of course it's always when he seems to want something. He either wants to eat, or be held, or stand up or something. (I'm excited because Lauren said Da-da a LONG time before she ever said Ma-ma.) He's also improving on his crawling, and he seems to be enjoying it more since he sees that he can actually get himself across the floor.

Lauren has actually been requesting snacks of fruit, which I'm very pleased about. Yesterday it was a banana (lellow nana) and today it was an apple. I'll let her have as much fruit as she wants! Now if we could just get her stop begging for lollipops. . .
