Lauren is now potty champion! She finally figured out that she gets jelly beans if she goes on the potty, so now she wants to go all the time. In fact, she probably wouldn't have gone in her diaper at all, but we put one on her so she could go with Mike to the store. At this rate, we'll probably start transitioning to underwear this coming week. I am so proud of her!
I think we can safely say that Jack is walking! He's up more than he's down these days, and he's starting to chase Lauren around already. Here we go! He's starting to get really fast, so I've been joking that by the end of the week he'll be running. Then we'll really have to watch out, becuase that boy is quick! He also continues his other favorite pastime, opening and closing doors. When Lauren goes into the bathroom to use the potty, Jack follows her in there to play with the door. Then the dog folows us in there, and pretty soon it's a family affair!Comments:Add a comment:

Today Lauren pooped on the potty before naptime which is a major accomplishment because she has previously been waiting to get her diaper on. And although we had a pee accident on the floor of the playroom right before bathtime, she pooped on the potty just before going to bed for the night as well. So I think overall it's been quite a successful day!
I went to BabiesRus today and ordered another little armchair for Jack so they can each have their own. They've been wrestling over Lauren's. I also found another slipcover on clearance which was lucky becuase they've been discontinued. I have already washed the one on Lauren's chair several times!Comments:Add a comment:

Today we went to a great new place nearby called Kidz Club which is this carpeted indoor play space with a huge ball pit, playhouses, little cars, a full play kitchen, all kinds of stuff. Lauren and Taylor had a great time, and so did Jack even though he didn't get a morning nap. The funniest thing was Lauren DIVING head first into the ball pit! Jack was the gate-keeper at the door of the play house. He just stood there shrieking with delight and opened and closed the door about a thousand times.
Then we had lunch at Cracker Barrel, which was sort of a disaster. Jack was really tired on top of being hungry, and Lauren kept wanting to get out of her seat. One of these days I'll learn how to juggle them both and not feel so entirely stressed the whole time. I don't really know what to do about Jack's shrieking. I got some nasty looks from some old folks. But honesty, how do you reason with a 13 month old?Comments:Add a comment:

Potty success tonight! Just when I was going to give up hope. But Lauren's bedtime ritual is getting later and later, and she's trying every delay tactic she can to avoid sleeping. Poor child, she's just like me!
I found a great scrapbooking store nearby called Scraptopia today which is really dangerous for my newfound interest in scrapbooking. Never mind that I've only completed 2 pages of Jack's book. It's a start, right?
The doctor's office called to say that all of Jack's test results were negative. In the meantime I've made an appointment with the gastro/intestinal specialist, so now I'm wondering if I should keep that. Not quite sure what to do. I was wondering if maybe he's having a late allergic reaction to milk. Or some sort of lactose intolerance (like Mike has). I had him off of milk for a few weeks, but I was still giving him yogurt and cheese. It's the only idea I've come up with so far.Comments:Add a comment:

The doctor recommended I make an appointment with a Gastro/Intestinal specialist for Jack, even though the lab results haven't come back yet. Hope we can get some answers soon. It's been so long since he's really been feeling 100 percent.
Lauren was ma petite Picasso today, painting me a mini masterpiece! Painting is her new favorite activity, and unfortunately one we can only do when Jack's sleeping and she's awake, and those times are few and far between!
Once Jack was down for the night I left him home with Jennifer and took Lauren to see Mike play one of his playoff softball games. It was fun, although I don't know how much of the game we actually watched. She always gets so distracted by all the others kids running around. Afterwards we went to this great ice cream place called Maggie Moo's and Lauren had a cup with half cotton candy flavor ice cream (which was bright blue), and half twizzler (which was bright red.) Mixed in she insisted on skittles. I think everything was decided on the merits of color. So we got home late and she was excited and hopped up on sugar, but she mostly seemd to enjoy having an activity where it was just she and I, especially at night which is a rarity. I decided it's OK because we don't get the opportunity very often. I mean, it's summer, baseball and ice-cream are American traditions!Comments:Add a comment:

Yes, our little monkey is definitely checking out the walking thing. His confidence is growing with every toddle! Still no word from the doctor on his lab results. He's about the same, just seems a little tired and didn't drink his milk well today.
Lauren continues to be great in swim class. Today we worked on having them get in the water from a sitting position out of the pool and turn around and grab the wall. It's a little nerve-wracking seeing her go under the water and not holding her, but I guess that's what this is all about. Of course Lauren's favorite part seems to be when we get out and she gets a sticker and she has a snack!
Otherwise we had a playdate here with Taylor where all three of them proceeded to shriek at the top of their lungs for minutes at a time which was just excrutiating to the rest of us!Comments:Add a comment:

Jack had MAJOR walking breakthrough yesterday! All of a sudden he seems to get it and he strikes out on his own. He can make it all the way down the entrance hall and that's 3 or 4 yards at least. He's so cute, he just squeals in delight! He looks like a little trained bear or something because he keeps both arms up un the air. Sometimes he goes sort of sideways and then it looks like a crab walk. But it's exciting to see him enjoying it instead of just resisting it all the time. I don't know if we can say he's officially walking, but he's well on is way.
Lauren started her IP2 swim class. She did fine but the instructor told me to not have her jump in to me because they teach never to jump in TO someone, they always teach the kids to swim to the wall. I see the safety issues, but until she can jump in alone, what am I supposed to do in the meanwhile? It's her FAVORITE thing to do. I mean, she'll do it 20 times in a row. Hmm. . . not sure about that one.Comments:Add a comment:

I forgot to write that we had potty success yesterday! After a lot of resistence Lauren finally peed on the potty late in the afternoon. She was very proud of herself and enjoyed her 3 jelly beans. Then, this morning she did it again, so we gave her a lollipop, in hopes of motivating her. Mike's idea is to not let her nap until she poops, because she's been waiting until she has a diaper on to do it. So it's 4PM and she's still up. I predict that she won't go until she has her diaper on tonight. I'm worried that she's going to make herself constipated, but I'm not sure what else to do at this point. Ughh. She's quite a little monster when she hasn't napped. I'm not looking forward to this evening.
But she did go right to sleep last night. Well, pretty much. I only went in 3 times I think. That's progress!

Thursday Lauren got a litte certificate and a lollipop for completing the IP1 swim class. She did really well, I am so proud of her! It was also our 4th Anniverary that day, so we went to an extravagant dinner at Bern's Steak House which was really an experience. They have one of the largest wine lists in the country. We took a tour of the kitchen an wine cellar after dinner to make some room for dessert, which is taken upstairs in these little private dessert rooms.
Friday we had playgroup at the pool, which was stressful for me because I had to have Jack in the stroller because of his stomach bug. He got really hot and sweaty and only napped a few minutes. Lauren said she wanted to use the potty which involved taking both her and Jack into the clubhouse to use the bathroom. Another false alarm. So aggravating!
I called the doctor again about Jack's continuing stomach bug, and he told me we should get a stool sample to the lab to check for bacteria and parasites. That involved going to the doctor's office to pick up the form, then to the lab to pick up the containers. I was just going to bring it in on Monday, but as it happens Jack had a huge diaperload when I got home, so I turned right around and got the samples back to the lab just before they closed for the day. Whew! At least that's one less thing to do on Monday. I hope they can give us some clue as to what's bothering him. We put him back on a regular diet and it's been worse, so I'm returning to the BRAT diet until we hear the results of the tests.
He is really walking quite a bit now. His confidence is growing. He toddles 4 or 5 steps at a time here and there. He does fall over, but that seems to distress him less and less.
We went on a family excursion to Home Depot today. That was a first in quite a while. We were shopping for a fridge for the garage. Then lunch out where an elderly couple just glared at me every time either of the kids made a peep, (which was admittedly often). But I mean, it was Chili's for goodness sake, the place is full of people with kids! Every time we eat a meal out I wind up wondering why we thought it was a good idea. But then I keep thinking if they never eat out then they'll never learn how to behave in public. Oh well, I guess we just have to keep on trying.Comments:Add a comment:

Swim class was great. I'm so impressed at how Lauren has embraced going under the water. It's all she wants to do now. That and jumping in. Unfortunately Taylor is not enjoying it as much, so they won't be joining us for the infant survival class next session. That's supposed to help them if they accidently fall into the pool. I just figure we should build on the skills she's just learned before we start Preschool next month.
Jack is still not 100% with his stools, so I called the doctor again. He said to put him back on his regular diet and call again if things haven't improved in a few days. He's sleeping a lot too. Hard to tell if he's not feeling good, or he's consolidating naps, or if he's just having a growth spurt. He totally walked about 7 steps today. He's at the point where he can do it, he just doesn't want to!
Lauren took ages to go to sleep again both for nap and bedtime, but she hasn't climbed out so far, and that's my biggest worry right now. I think it will just take her a while to adjust. I'm glad we have this daybed as an option because I think a single bed would still seem huge to her!Comments:Add a comment:

Hard, hard day. Swim class went OK, Lauren really does like going under the surface now that she knoes to hold her breath. My big epiphany was that I need to put her hair back in a ponytail because when it's wet it stretches out and is so long it gets in her face.
I had a hard time getting Lauren down for her nap. So much so that I gave up in the end and just got her up. First of all she kept screaming and waking Jack up. Then the zipper on her crib tent broke and she wouldn't stop messing with it, so I finally took the whole thing off. Then she looked like she was going to climb out. So I gave up on the nap, and she woke Jack up early too. Grrr.
I decided that I needed to take the drop rail off her crib and convert it to a day/toddler bed. I also wanted to take the wheels off. Well, that proved more difficult than I had imagined, so I called the store where I bought it from. The guy was very helpful, and in the end decided to come out himself and fix it for me! That was a relief, because I needed it done before putting her down for the night.
But that wole thing put us off schedule so Jack was a bit late going to bed. But my idea of getting Lauren down early was just a pipe dream! She got into her bed eagerly enough, but kept screaming every time I shut the door. Finally I asked her if she wanted me to leave the door open, and she said yes, and was quiet after that. (Duh, I wish I'd thought of that earlier!) But then I was watching her very carefully on the video monitor and she got up a bunch of times and was looking like she was gong to climb out of bed to explore. Every time I went to her door and told her to lay down. Finally after about 8 times she fell asleep and I was able to shut the dor so Mike doesn't wake her when he arrives home.
I'm so exhausted I think I'm going to go to bed right now. . .

I was at an audition in Orlando today, so Mike took Lauren to swim class. Apparantly she actually LIKES to go underwater! That's a change from the other day, so I'm wondering if she was just showing off for Daddy. Jack is apparenty still sleeping a lot, and he seems to finally be over his stomach bug. Yeah!
In potty news, Lauren actually told Jennifer she had to poop, which is new, but unfortunately they didn't make it to the potty in time. Oh well, it's progress. . . sort of! She also peed in the potty before, and after her bath. The peeing IN the bath was not so good, and what brought a swift and premature end to bathtime. At least it didn't spray all over like it used to with Jack!

Two accidents on the floor today, (no, wait it was actually three). Yikes! And no real potty time to speak of. So one step forward, two steps back, as always!
Jack seems a little better, but napping a lot and waking up sort of cranky. Still taking us on tours around the house holding just one finger. He's become very good at his basketball contraption that he got for his birthday. He does litte victory dances everty time he dunks one in. What can I say, the boy's got rythm!Comments:Add a comment:

Potty Success! After a whole morning of holding it in, Lauren finally had to go pee really badly but kept refusung to sit on the potty. I told her I had to use the potty, and so she agreed to come with me and actually sat and peed on the potty! That's the first time in a long while. She seemed pretty alarmed at the force at which it came out, which I can understand because she doesn't experience that when she's wearing a diaper. But we did a big potty dance and made a big deal out of it, and she seemed really proud of herself. I had her pour the pee into the toilet, flush and wave it bye bye. Then we washed hands and she got 3 jelly beans. I'm hoping that will be motivation for a repeat perfomance! So I'm thinking that the whole naked bottom thing is pretty effective. But it's early days yet. . . .
Jack had a little diarrhea this morning, but otherwise seemd fine except that he had a really long (2 hours!)afternoon nap. He's doing more walking around the house with the walker. Today he crawled over to it and pulled up and began pushing it all on his own accord.
I finally booked our first trip to Dinsey World! Florida residents can get this great 3-day pass which a really good deal, so we're going Labor Day weekend because that's when the Wiggles will be there. Our neighbors Allison and Charles are going then too with their daughter Taylor, and we're staying at the same resort, so it should be fun. I'm gong to try to pack significantly less this time! It will be an easy car ride, though, just about an hour and a half away. I think Lauren is finally at an age when she will really enjoy it. Hopefully Jack will be happy to tag along. It's going to really hot then, that's the only drawback.Comments:Add a comment:

This mornining we went to a birthday party for Justin, one of Lauren's playgroup buddies, who is just turning 3. It was fun, and there were a lot of new babies there, (siblings of the other playgroup kids). Both Lauren and Jack were very interested in the babies. Jack was intermittently cranky from missing his nap, but he did pretty well playing with all the big boys. Lauren got cake frosting all over her face, it was so funny!
Jack fell asleep as soon as we got home, so I was able to give Lauren a calm lunch and get her down for her nap at a reasonable time for once. Then I actually took a nap for an hour, which was such bliss! Then when Jennifer got here I went to get a manicure and peducure which is another indulgence.
I was fairly calm upon returning until I decided to let Lauren do some painting since Jack was on his way to bed. I got her all set up, but quicky realized that she's not really ready to follow directions like rinsing the brush before using a diferent color. Yikes! Maybe finger painting would be better. Or I need to get some different supplies so that if she runs all the colors together it won't really matter. Another expedition to Michael's Craft store might be in order.Comments:Add a comment:

Swim class with Lauren was good, there was less crying with the scoops under the surface. She's also listening to me pretty well and following directions. And she even gets excited when she finishes a skill. So it's going well, a lot better than I could have expected.
Jack had a long afternoon nap and was sort of fussy this afternoon, but there were also many moments of peaceful parallel playing with his sister which feel like little miracles when they happen. It's like the clouds suddenly parting after a day of pouring rain! I even let him hold a few crayons today, and he was shreiking in delight, because he's not usually allowed to have them. But I watched him carefully and he only tried to put it in his mouth once. I don't think he quite understands that they're for coloring, but he likes holding them and banging them on the table.
Project naked bottom had another slow day. No accidents but no real potty time either. She seems to wait until her nap and mealtimes (when I put her in a diaper) to do her business. Not quite sure what to do about that.
Otherwise Her Majesty had fun tonight after Jack had gone to bed with her little Pip Squeak washable markers and her Color Wonder finger paints. I think she's going to enjoy all the crafts at preschool.Comments:Add a comment:

In swim class today we did scooping under the water, and Lauren did great! Both her and Taylor did cry, but they got over it fairly fast. They also did kicking and "digging" with their hands. I'm excited about the progres I see already. She even holds onto the wall without trying to climb out now.
Jack's doing ok but still has diarrhea. He was very needy of my attention this afternoon, and I was just trying to get some laundry done, but he wanted to be held a lot.
Lauren had another peeing accident this afternoon. She did say that she wanted to go to the potty, she just didn't make it there in time. At least this time it was on the tile. Even though this is a very messy process, I do think she's starting to get it.
Otherwise I was just trying all afternoon to get organized for scrapbooking club tonight. I got another page of Jack's book done, which took me forever, but I'm sure I'll get faster as I get used to it. Lauren loves looking at pictures, so I'm looking forward to getting her book done too, so she can pour over it at her leisure.

I had to take my car to the dealer this morning for some work, and I almost didn't made it back in time to take Lauren to swim class, but we made it JUST in time! Whew! I think it's going to be a good system for her to learn. What they are really doing is training ME to teach her. We stayed for a little while frolicking in the pool, but Lauren was being very defiant and wouldn't listen to me, so she had to have a time out. After that she had a juice box and a snack and she became suddenly quite reasonable. It made me realize she was probably cranky because she was hungry and thirsty. Oops. That's the problem when you don't give your child all their meals, you don't always know how well they ate. (Of course Lauren hardly ever eats well, so it's probably always a good guess!) I'm still trying to figure out snacks that are healthy and eaily portable and don't require refridgeration.
Jack had a long morning nap back at home, but his diarrhea continues. He seems fine otherwise though. We've added yogurt back into his diet because apparently it has bacteria that can be helpful to the stomach. I called the doctor and he said to just watch him and make sure he's not getting dehydrated. He said cheese can be constipating, so we'll add that back into his diet tomorrow and see if that helps. He said if it continues into next week we'll get a stool sample checked by the lab.
Project Naked Bottom is officially underway with our first accident on the floor! Ay yay yay. Lauren had a funny look on her face, so I put her on the potty, but she wouldn't stay there. Then I saw a little wet patch on her dress, so I put her on the potty again, also to no avail. Then I changed her dress and shortly thereafter she came running in from the playroom with pee running down her legs and off her feet. She was fairly distressed, which I guess is all part of the process. A few accidents and she should start to make the connection between the feeling of having to go with what happens when she goes and she's not sitting on the potty. I did NOT enjoy cleaning pee up all over the floor, although I was at least thankful it wasn't on the carpet. This all occurred of course while I was trying to feed Jack dinner. Then she was dry until after her bath when she had another poop,(very unusual) which makes me think she's holding it in until she has a diaper on. In some ways I'm thankful, but she'll have to get over that hurdle eventually. Oh well, I guess she won't be graduating high school in diapers!Comments:Add a comment:

Lauren's swim class changed our class time to two hours earlier, (without notice)so we missed it today. I was so disappointed because we were really looking forward to the first day. They said they'd add five minutes onto each class this week. Grrr. Instead we had Taylor and Allison over to swim in our pool, and they stayed for lunch, so at least it turned into a play date. The girls are starting to wrestle each other which is alarming but hilarious at the same time!
Jack's stomach seems to be still bothering him. I think he's also teething, one of the left bottom front ones seems to be poking through. He was pretty cranky today. Poor little fella. No wonder he doesn't want to concentrate on walking - his tummy hurts, his gums hurt - I'd be cranky too!
Project Naked Bottom was sort of a bust today. We had Lauren in a dress but no diaper all morning except for 10 minutes when I was putting Jack down for his afternoon nap, and of course THAT is when she pooped. And then she had a diaper on for her nap, and she peed in that, and then nothing all afternoon. So no accidents, but no potty time either. Oh well, Rome wasn't built in a day! I went to the consignment store and got a bunch of comfy t-shirt knit dresses to put her in for the time being. Then if we have accidents it won't be upsetting if they get ruined.Comments:Add a comment:

Friday I took Lauren to playgroup at the pool but left Jack in the stroller since I didn't want to risk a runny BM in the pool, that would just be so nasty. We tried going without the float devices in her swimsuit, and she definitely missed them. But we're starting swim classes Monday and I wanted to get her used to being without them. Unfortunately we had to leave early beacause there were threatening clouds overhead. I didn't want to get caught in the rain because I had walked over with the stroller. One of my worst nightmares is getting hit by lightning, especially when I'm alone with the kids. It was sunny the whole way home, and then moments after we got inside the skies opened up. Whew! Lucky break!
After two days of not pooping at all, Jack had a normal one, but then more diarrhea again, so I'm a little frustrated. I thought he was getting over it. Oh well, more BRAT diet for a few more days. He is doing some short toddles all on his own volition from furniture to furniture. He likes to walk around the house holding one finger of my hand, but throws a hissy fit if I try to let go. He'll get there. I have to resist pushing him too hard. Oh yeah, and this morning he slept for 2 hours! That is pretty much unheard of these days. He woke up in such a good mood! He's a completely different baby when he's well rested.
We've started "Project Naked Bottom" with Lauren in an attempt to make some progress in potty training. At first I tried putting her in a simple t-shirt dress, but she refused to pull it up when she sat on the potty, so we changed to puting her in just a t-shirt. Somehow that seems better than completely nude. No luck on the potty so far, but it's just been a few hours, so we've got a long couple of days ahead of us.Comments:Add a comment:

Jack seems much better. Tatiana suggested that I give him soy milk since Mike and I drink that. I don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier, but he sucked it down this morning no problem. Then I remembered that I had three containers of breast milk left over in the freezer, so we gave him that and he hasn't had any more diarrhea all day. That and the BRAT diet seem to be doing the trick.
It's my birthday today so today was all about me. Mike framed two of the photos from Maine and also got me a fabulous new digital camera! Now I can take even better pictures of our beautiful children. He also took me (just me, no kids)to lunch at Saddlebrook which is a resort and golf course nearby. If that wasn't enough, the kids sent me flowers (very cute message from Proflowers) and Mike also got me a brownie cake with "Mommy Burtday Pawtee!!" written on it in icing. AND a helium baloon. So I certainly can't complain that the day went by unnoticed!

Hope everyone had a nice 4th! We hosted an impromptu BBQ with some neighbors and some colleagues of Mike's from the University. It was all I could do to try to get the house clean with our two little tornados. Mike actually did all the shopping/cooking on the grill. It was a little tricky because people came at 4pm and around 5:30 I had to start the dinner/bath/bed routine for Jack. Lauren refused to eat anything except jelly beans and a cupcake. Then she was on a sugar high for the rest of the evening. We let her stay up late with the grownups to watch the fireworks. We could see several different shows going on in the distance around us, and some were even going off on the boardwalk just behind our house. In fact our neighbor also had quite a few going off for a few hours. Lauren vacillated between being thrilled and a bit scared, I think of the noise. Unfortunately all the noise woke Jack up and he was EXTREMELY upset for a little while.
Today was a big day. First I left Jack home with Mike and took Lauren to Story Time at the library. She's doing much better at paying attention and participating in the songs, but she was very cuddly and didn't really want to stray from my lap. I think she was still tired from her late night up. She woke up saying "I LOVE jelly beans. I LOVE party!" I worry for her teenage years already!
Then we came home and Jack was just waking up from his nap, so we got him fed by then and took him for his first official haircut. This time I left Lauren home with Jennifer since it was time for her lunch/nap. Jack did so well, I was so proud of him. The place has a great set-up. You pick a movie for them to watch (I went with baby Einstein since he tends to be mesmerised by those) and they sat him in this little fire engine and strapped him in. And he sat still, didn't cry or anything. His hair looks a little short to me now (of course), but it has a much better general shape.
Then I ran over to pick up my Creative Memories Scrapbooking supplies which had arrived. It's very exciting, and I'm goijg to a Scrapbooking Club meeting next week to be sure I actually start to use my stuff. I am determined to get through Jack's book by the end of the summer. That may be a bit ambitious, but I'm going to try!
THEN when Lauren woke up I took her over to Allison and Taylor's house for a playdate. It's so funny to se her interact with someone her own size and age one-on-one. I think she's getting used to being able to bully Jack, so it's odd for her to be the one being chased etc. They have a small dog and 2 cats, one of whom is a SAINT and will just sit there and take all of thier abuse which I find incredible. I've ever seen a cat put up with so much.
So I returned to a fussy Jack who has been having a little diarrhea, so I decided to skip his last bottle of milk and tried to give him Pedialyte, to no avail. He finally did take some diluted juice, but I'm not sure that was the best thing either. I'm going to call the doctor in the morning. I'm considering giving him soy milk, but I'm not sure if that's any better for an upset stomach. Otherwise I guess we just need to stick to the BRAT diet(banana/rice/apples/toast) for a day or two and see if that helps.Comments:Add a comment:

We're all feeling much better. Just a little lingering congestion, so this was hopefully the last day of being confined to the house. Which is just in time because Lauren's current Wiggles obsession is starting to get to me!
I finally signed Lauren up for swim class, and hopefully our neighbors Allison and Taylor will be joining us in the same class. That should make it more fun for everyone. Of course now I'm feeling guilty that I'm not doing lessons with Jack, but I can only be in the water with one at a time. I've pledged to myself to practice with him in the water when Lauren starts preschool in August because it will be sweltering here right through October at least.
Jack has started throwing little fits when he doesn't get his way. Tatiana told me to try to ignore it, but it's hard when he's so forcefully flinging himself around the the floor! I don't recall Lauren doing that sort of thing until about 18 months. This does not bode well for the terrible two's with him. . .Comments:Add a comment:
