Keeping Track of Lauren & Jack

April 2007

So whatever cold Jack had seemed to be a 24 hour thing although he still had a slightly runny nose today. I'm still trying to figure out if it's allergies, or what? We missed his playgroup just to be sure he was really on the mend.

An exciting language development for Jack has been the emergence of both "Yes" and "Yeah" which is a welcome relief from "NO!!"! His favorite movie seems to be Finding Nemo although he does get scared during the barracuda/shark scenes. But whenever we're goig through our dvd's to pick one out, that's the one he asks for! I guess he gets sick of all the princess stuff that Lauren is constantly demanding.

Lauren is definitely pushing the limits with some of her behavior. She's been trying to throw complete hysterical fits when she doesn't get her way. Of course I can't let her get away with that, but it's exhausting to deal with. Today she wasn't listening to me when I told her to be quiet and not run around like a crazy banshee in the library. After repeated warnings I finally just took her home without checking out the dvd's and book she had chosen. I think she was really shocked that I followed through, and that no amount of crying could convince me to change my mind. I can only hope that she'll learn a lesson and take me more seriously next time. And Jack has his fits too, so it gets sort of hairy sometimes. Luckily they don't tend to freak out at the same time, or we'd never go anywhere!

I finally figured out how to get the ink marker out of Lauren's dress (hairspray and then rubbed it with a bar of soap, then laundered as usual) but then the machine ripped half of the hem off! I knew if I tried to sew it myself by hand I would ruin the dress, so I took it to the dry-cleaners who do alterations and we just now got it back. Lauren is refusing to wear anything but dresses, but this red dress with white flowers is her absolute favorite and she has been asking for it hourly, so I for one am relieved to get it back!

I also finally took Lauren to the lab to get her hemoglobin tested which was not fun. She was actually very brave becasue she only cried for about a miunute, but she looked at me with such betrayal in her eyes, I wanted to cry too. I took her to lunch at Cracker Barrel to make up for it, and it was a pleasant surprise how easy it was just the two of us. She even ate well! Unfortunately our pediatrician is out for the week so we have to wait to hear the results.

In the meantime I've also made appointments for Lauren' speech evaluation. I'm hoping they'll tell me that she's fine, but I'd hate to think that there was something we could be doing to help now (IE therapy).

We had a great birthday party this weekend for someone from Jack's playgroup at MY GYM and both kids did great except for the fits Jack threw because Mike wouldn't let him crawl UNDER the low trampoline!

Jack has been a little under the weather today. At first I thought it might be allergies becuase he had a little bit of a runny nose and was sneezing this morning. But he got tired and cranky at 11AM which is very unusual, then had no appetite for lunch. He woke up a half hour into his nap with an obvious fever. I gave him Motrin and that brought his fever down and he seemed much better this afternoon, but the fever was back when he woke up crying about 10PM tonight. So we'll see how he does in the morning if he warrants a trip to the doctor. I don't like the thought of going to a strange doctor (filling in for our regular one).

It's been a busy week just getting back into the swing of things. We finally got our TV fixed which is great because those kids are really hard on our little portable dvd player!

Saturday we had a garage sale and we got rid of a lot of our old baby gear including 2 strollers and a car seat! People also semed to want a lot the stuffed animals, which I was thrilled about because we have way too many and they just take up so much room, and neither Lauren nor Jack sem to have any interest in them anyway.

Since we had more room we took that opportunity to clean out the garage a bit which was long overdue. We finally pumped up the "Jumpolene" which we received from Auntie Tati for Christmas and it is indeed huge. Mike had to get a special pump to blow it up and it still took ages. It's sort of a cross between a bouncy house and a tramplolene. The kids loved it but they won't stay in there for very long at a stretch.

The last few days have been more like Spring-like, cooler and rainy, so we've been sort of holed up indoors. NOT a great time for the TV to blow a fuse! Thank goodness for the portable DVD player in times like these!

Lauren is still insisting on wearing dresses, and we only have two that are warm enough. She won't even consider wearing a skirt, so we just have to keep washing and wearing the same ones until it warms back up again, (which should be any second now.)

We did have a playdate over at Taylor's today and they had fun as always. It was just pouring with rain so we stayed for lunch in the hopes that it would stop by the time we left but it was still raining 2 hours later!

I'm really relieved that Lauren has school again tomorrow, FINALLY, after the Easter break. She's been asking about it and she misses her friends and her routine.

I was dismayed to find that the lining of the Pampers Cruisers diapers are leaving a blue stain on Jack's legs as well. I had started using them (even though I don't really like the way they smell) because I really like the way they fit. I just hate the fact that I am forced to order diapers online, but I did find a website that has free shipping, so that's something at least!

Yesterday Lauren had ballet and went to the library as usual, and then later we went out to dinner and I have to say it wasn't too bad. Both kids were fairly well behaved and though they didn't eat especially well, there weren't any major meltdowns and Mike and I both were able to finish our meals while they were still hot. I consider that progress!

Today we took a nice walk to take advantage of the slightly cooler weather. I thought that would tire them both out, but Jack was still running some serious laps around the kithchen after dinner. He must have been at it for at least 15 minutes straight, I'm surprised he didn't get dizzy! Lauren ate all of her lunch AND dinner today, motivated by her Easter treats. I can't stress enoguh what a rarity this is for her to eat everything off her plate!

We got Bambi from Netflix, and we watched it today for the first time. It really brings up a lot of issues, death, mating, humans encroaching on the environment, to name a few! Lauren kept asking, where's his mommy? I said she fell down and she was gone. Upon later questioning I did say she died and that Bambi was sad, but that his Daddy would took care of him. Lauren accepted this remarkably well. I was surprised she didn't get more upset, but I think she's still too young to really comprehend the concept of death. She asked to watch it again when it was over, so that's a good sign anyway.

Tuesday we had a playdate with Taylor at her house. Wednesday we had a goodbye party for someone from the Mom's club at the Park which was fun.

Thurday I took Lauren to the doctor for a follow-up on her hemoglobin and to my dismay he said it was even lower than before, even though we've resumed giving her vitamins every day with an iron supplement. But he did say that he's not sure about the machine he uses to measure and he's sending us to the lab to make sure. I also asked about Lauren's speech. She is very talkative and her voabulary is quite extensive, it's her articualtion that I'm worried about. She still slurs words together quite a lot. So the doctor gave me a referral. Apparently with any speech referral you have to get the hearing checked first. I'm fairly certain that her hearing is fine, but we have to follow procedures. So I have a lot of appointments to set up for Lauren in the next few weeks.

Jack has been waking up a lot at night really upset, for no apparent reason. I'm wondering if it's night terrors, because sometimes even picking him up doesn't console him right away. Another funny thing is that he seems to be sort of asking to be put in his crib sometimes at nap time or bedtime. It's like he's had enough cuddling and he's ready to sleep.

Saturday we had the Easter Egg hunt at the community center, which we were a bit of a hurry about since Lauren also had ballet class. Jack seemed to get the idea very quickly that the eggs had candy inside, which was surprising since up until now he hasn't had much of a sweet tooth. Ballet went well even though we didn't get there especially early. Our usual trip to the library was fruitful becuase they had "Milo and Otis" one of Lauren's current favorite movies.

Sunday we went to the Air show at McDill Air Force Base. We got there early and the kids climbed in and out of a few planes, and then we watched the jets and helicopters doing fancy maneuvers above our heads. I'm not sure Jack found it as exciting as I had thought he would. He gets frustrated being in the stroller, especially since big sis is out walking around. He had a few screaming fits which was trying on the nerves. Unfortunately we missed the Blue Angels, but that would have implied missing nap time completely, and that way lies madness! As it was they didn't nap well. They both conked out in the car but didn't transfer to bed when we got home. If only we could leave then in those car seats somehow, but they're way too big.

Today Lauren ate all of her lunch which included a full bowl of mixed veggies, AND she ate all of her dinner too, which must be some sort of record! She is very motivated to earn the right to some of her Easter booty. Thanks so much to Grandma Irene for the outfits and the Easter basket full of goodies!
