Lauren seemed to be doing a lot better, so I sent her to school despite her lobbying hard to stay home. She was milking her little bit of lingering congestion for all it was worth! But once she got there she seemed happy enough.
Jack, on the other hand, refused to eat any breakfast but seemed OK otherwise, so I took him to Music class. Class was OK and he drank a sippy cup full of milk while there. Afterwards he was begging to go to the playground next door, but once we got there he immediately said he wanted to go home. That should have been the first red flag. Then as I was trying to get him into the car he wanted to go check out the truck pumping chlorine into the pool. The truck driver was nice enough to let him climb up into the cab and pull the horn. Jack was thrilled, but immediately wanted to get down. Red flag #2. Then, I finally get him into his car seat and he throws up all over himself and the seat. There wasn't much I could do but wipe him off as much as I could and head straight home.
He actually seemed to feel much better right afterwards, and after a bath and clean clothes he seemed perfectly normal. Only he didn't want a single thing to eat, except some pretzels. I decided to give him soymilk since he might have a tummy bug that's making him lactose intolerant and he drank it down quite happily and (thankfully) kept it down. He didn't really want to eat the rest of the day, but he drank plenty of fluids so I'm just going to wait and see. He did have some dark circles under his eyes despite napping quite well, which makes me wonder about allergies.
I just want to point out that washing the car seat cover is such a pain in the neck! They suggest you hand wash it and hang it up to dry, all of which were arduous tasks. I don't think I would have survived in a time before washing machines!Comments:Add a comment:

Today our one big outing was to Target. I'm still not quite sure what to do about the diaper stituation since I think Jack is getting to be a little big for the Target brand size 6. The Buzz Lightyear Huggies Pull-ups make his legs blue, as do the Pampers Size 7. I think I'm going to check out various pull-ups before I resort to getting them online like I do his current night time diapers.
Our big purchase today was a new flowery boom box for Lauren, so Jack can have her plain black one for his room. I never got him one because he used to have his musical aquarium in his crib. Once he stopped liking that, he seemed to do fine without any music, and we would just put on the air purifier (effectively a while noise maker). But he's been asking for music and I think he's right to question why Sissy gets music when she goes to sleep and he does not. I was actually at rehearsal when he went to sleep so I'll have to ask how he reacted to it at bedtime.
It is actually cold here! I would be rejoicing execpt that it's such a shock since the other day it was 80 degrees and today it was 40! I guess it's all the best since we're stuck indoors with colds anyway.

Monday Lauren stayed home from school since her cough is still bad. I made an appointment at the doctor, and by the time we made it there in the afternoon, of course she seemed a lot better. She doesn't really seem all that sick, but the cough is so bad sometimes she seems like she can't breathe, and she's been saying that her throat hurts, so I was worried about strep throat. Well, it turns out her throat is fine, nothing is swollen and her chest even sounds pretty clear. He was going to prescribe some cough medecine, but at that point the over the counter stuff seemd to be adequate. I felt like an idiot because there were kids there that were really sick, and I probably exposed her to those germs now!
Yesterday Mike took Jack to his Mygym class and he apparently did not do very well, not participating etc. I don't know how much of that is that the novelty of having Daddy there, but it's not encouraging! I took Lauren for a follow-up visit to the dentist. Since her tooth is much better, they considered this a regular visit with x-rays and a cleaning. The good news is that there's no cavaties, which is a miracle considering all the candy that girl wants to consume! They showed me that there's some plaque at the gum line so we need to do a bettter job brushing, and we need to start flossing the molars. That should be interesting!
Lauren's cough continues to trouble her, and now Jack seems to have it again too. He is not as bad as her, but it's very frustrating since he was doing better. I kept her home again from school today, and I think if it hasn't improved by tomorrow I'll call the doctor back and get some antibiotics and some bettter cough medecine. Sara had a respitory infection last week, and I'm worried that they have the same thing and they just can't shake it.Comments:Add a comment:

Friday Lauren had just the tiniest tickle of a cough which didn't seem bad enough to keep her home from school, but has been getting progressively worse ever since. I kept her home from ballet yesterday and they were housebound all of today too. We did go out to dinner on Saturday night which was probably ill-advised. I thought it would be good to get out of the house, but all it did was delay our entire nightime schedule. But they really seem like they're going to kill each other if we don't get out at some point. Poor Jack is finally feeling better and now Lauren has the cough, and it seems much worse than when Jack had it. I felt so bad for her. I took a special trip to Walgreens to get "Rhino pops" which are like lozenges with zinc and vitamin c, but they're lollipops so they don't chew them quite so fast and there isn't the same choking hazard. Of course that meant that Jack insisted on having one too, so I gave him a dum-dum since they're tiny. Otherwise the injustice of it all is just too much for him!

This morning's playgroup was actually at Michael's Craft for a class. It was a good one, they glued colorful stones on top of a box and then painted the box. Jack worked very quickly (with my help with the glue) and picked out a nice variety of colors for his lid. He also seemed to understand that we needed to cover all the bare spots with paint, and hapily slapped it on there with gusto. Lauren, on the otherhand, was very slow and meticulous and refused any help whatsoever. She carefully put a small drop of glue and then placed each stone on it precisely. And her painting was very deliberate and precise, being very economic with her paint on the brush. It's so interesting to see their personalities emerge through these activities.
Afterwards we stopped at Pride park on the way home. There are always a lot of school kids out there becaue the park is shared by Pride Elementary. The most encouraging thing was Lauren asking "When I get bigger, can I go to Pride school?" I was a little surprised, but I said yes, this will be your school. I am encouraged that she's so eager, and since she's already familiar with the playground, she should feel right at home when the time comes. I'm thinking that we should at least give it a shot before we consider a private school. We'll also have to see how the VPK goes next year.
One alarming thing happened, Lauren peed in her pants. There's a port-a-potty there, but it's way across a few soccer fields. By the time we got there, it was too late. Luckily, not much got on her dress and I had spare undies, but I think she just didn't want to take time out of playing to take care of business. Also, Jack was very interested in the port-a-potty and wanted to go, but I couldn't stand the thought of exposing him to those germs unneccesarily, so I didn't let him in there. Thinking back on it now, I realize that I should encourage ANY and all interest in the potty, and I should have just let him go in there. Oh well. Live and learn. I also think I should invest in one of those portable potty's for the car!Comments:Add a comment:

Yesterday Jack had MyGym and he's doing a bit better with listening and waiting for the various skills, but circle time is still a big challenge. At one point during free play time he climbed all the way up this ladder mounted to the wall, all the way to the ceiling - showing absolutely no fear, which was great except that he wanted me to catch him on his way down! Yikes!
Lauren's favorite thing at the moment is playing games on Noggin.com, and when we left for MyGym she was on the computer, and when we returned, she was still there. She was dressed, so I can only assume she took a break in there somewhere. The games on that site are all educational, but I worry that she's already getting addicted to computer games! I am considering setting up a low table with one of our old laptops, but then it will be even harder to limit her access to it. As it is, she's taken to turning the computer off without logging off. Plus they're starting to fight over it. Jack doesn't really have the hand/eye coordination for a very effective mouse technique, and he doesn't quite have the double click yet either. But that doesn't stop him from wanting to participate!
Today Lauren had school and I took Jack playgroup at the park. I have officially decided that he's too big for the bucket seat swings. He's getting so heavy to lift, and his feet get stuck, so I've been refusing to push him unless he goes on the big boy swing. He also likes to lay on the big swing on his stomach and pretend to be Buzz Lightyear. "To Infinity and Beyond!"Comments:Add a comment:

Urrgh, Monday, Monday. It was a long one. First off the microwave repair guy came and it's not good news. Repairing it requires a part they need to order and that could take weeks. Weeks! I feel like I'm without a limb. I've completely forgotten how to heat things up conventionally!
Then it was off to Kidz Club since I knew we'd be housebound for the afternoon. That was fun, Lauren hasn't been there in a while and I think Jack enjoyed her company since she didn't have school. But since we had a late start, we were late back for lunch and naps. Then neither one stayed down long, so they were both sort of cranky after that. We spent the next 2 hours dodging Keiley, our new cleaning lady so she could work her magic without all those little feet and hands undoing all her hard work. I'm still amazed how they're able to make a game out of almost anything. They spent about 20 minutes running in circles around the ottoman in Lauren's room!
Once Keily was done I packed them into the car to work off some energy at the MacDonalds playspace since it was cold and rainy. That wasn't such a success as Jack didn't really eat at all. I don't think he even had one french fry or apple slice. Zip. I guess they did burn off some energy climbing up and down and sliding. If I don't take them somewhere, they try to do those things on our couch, which is. . . not good. But Jack is very hit and miss with eating out. He doesn't seem to like most fast food at all. I know that's a good thing really, but there are times when there are not that many choices. Oh well, it's probably just a phase.Comments:Add a comment:

Wow, big weekend for us. I made the executive decision to miss ballet so that we could all go to our community fun day which was just going on in the morning. There were pony rides, a bounce house, mini golf, a fishing game in a big tub of water, and some other games. There was also cotton candy, popcorn, and other candies they won as prizes, so lunch afterwards was sort of a wash. They got fingerprinted with the police, which is something of course I hope we'll never have to refer to now that we have it. I , of course, forgot the camera as I often do these days. I'm a bad mommy not capturing these moments!
After naps we headed over to the University Area Communtiy Center where we're doing the show I'm rehearsing that opens in March to help work on building the sets. Or rather, Mike worked on the sets, and I wrangeled the kids around the playground and in the nearby Chick Fil-A playspace!
If that wasn't enough excitement for one weekend, today we went to the State Fair which was not far from us, a little closer to downtown Tampa. It was a long day, but I think the kids really had a good time. They blew right through nap time, not without some considerable crankiness, especially from Lauren. But I kept pushing at feeding and hydrating them, and they would inevitably perk up. Next year we're going to go on opening day (during the week)instead of the final Sunday. All we did was kiddie rides and saw one "Doggies of the Wild West Show" and we didn't get to half of the rides that the kids could have gone on. Luckily Jack is tall enough for most things, and Lauren is short enough to still ride them too. Lauren was very distraught when we finally dragged ourselves out of there about 4PM, but we had really had enough!Comments:Add a comment:

Happy Belated Valentines Day! It's been sort of a whirlwind of sugar-related hysteria. It all started Wednesday when we had a playdate with Taylor and the kids brought her a valentine and a box of those little sweethearts candy with the little sayings on them. When I realized that they were going to want to eat all of Taylors candy as soon as they gave it to her, I decided to bring them each their own box, and they both proceeded to eat the entire box. Now granted, the boxes are not very big, but it's still too much sugar in my opinion! I know should really be stricter about it, but every now and then I just give in to the sugar overload if it's a special occaision. The only problem with that is that Valentines has been going on pretty much all week!
Thursday the kids enjoyed their Valentines cards from us, and they had put their crayon designs on a card for Daddy. The only thing is that I had spent so much time making sure I had things for Mike, the nanny Sara, Lauren's teachers at school, as well as all her classmates, I hadn't really bought a special present for Lauren or Jack. I guess I knew they'd get Valentines and all kinds of goodies at playgroup and school, so it didn't occur to me. But Lauren kept asking, "Where's my present?" And she's right to wonder that, if everyone gets something but her. Luckily Jack was relatively oblivious. His card had a Thomas train whistle noise that would go off every time he opened the card. But Lauren was dissatisfied with her Tinkerbell card even though it had a lot of glitter. I don't think it would have mattered what it was, as long as she got something wrapped up and presented to her. I'll have to remember that for the next holiday, which I guess will be Easter.
Today Lauren dressed in her favorite red dress with hearts on it, and she was excited to get to school and see all the valentines and goodies that were in her special heart shaped basket that they had made and painted. I took Jack straight to Music class and he was definitely trying my patience again, not listening to me and constantly wandering up on the stage where there is all this dangerous equipment. He was much better after a time out. And another good thing, he said he had to go potty, and wanted to go into the bathroom. He sat on the toilet for a few minutes, which is the longest I've seen him do that, and with no soft cushy ring to stop him falling in! He didn't actually DO anything while he was sitting there, but I felt good that he was willing to try in a public place. Baby steps!Comments:Add a comment:

In the past few days Jack has become very attached to a stuffed animal dog that Lauren actually got for her birthday. He's wanted to sleep with it and everything. Luckily, Lauren has been very generous about letting him have it. It's just funny to me, because he does constantly get attached to things, and wants to carry them around, but whatever that is seems to change all the time. He finally seems to have latched onto the dog, so we'll see how long that lasts. I can't get him to give the dog a name. Every time I ask him he just says "Doggie."
Speaking of dogs, Lauren had to take home "Snickers" her classroom mascot who is a stuffed Snoopy dog. She's been taking care of him, feeding him, changing his clothes, and reading him stories at bedtime. I'm supposed to chronicle their adventures together and put our entry in the Snickers binder.
Today's MyGym class was rather trying for me. Jack seems to be the only one who refuses to particpate in cirlce time, and he was very disruptive today. When I can actually cajole him into doing any of the activities, he seems to enjoy it, but it's a real uphill battle. He really seems to enjoy testing the limits.Comments:Dawn: I'll happily form a Mothers of Circle Time Conscientious Objectors support group with you! We had the same thing going on today. Once Victor's in that room, he wants to do what he wants to do and that does not involve sitting still in a circle. Just know you're not alone. There's one in every class. Aren't we lucky?Add a comment:

Saturday Jack's cold seemd to be a bit worse, he was coughing a lot and had a constantly runny nose. I decided to leave him home with Mike when taking Lauren to ballet. In ballet they have come up with a theme for this year's show, which is Miss Spider's Tea party, and this year Lauren's class will be bumble bees. I'm sure she'll have fun buzzing around!
After naps I begged Mike to take them out of the house, both because they were stir crazy, and also becuase I needed to study my lines for my rehearsal today where I needed to be off-book. He not only took them to the park, but also out to dinner! I had a few blissfull hours of quiet script contemplation before they came charging back inside with sand in their shoes and excited about the video games at the restaurant.
This morning Lauren came creeping into bed with us at 6:30, which seemed painfully early. Mike made chocolate chip muffins with them, and then by the time they were dressed we were ready to head out for lunch. Lauren adamanently insisted she wasn't hungry, but she ate her way through a ton of cheerios and a basket of bread. Oh well, I guesss she won't starve! After naps Lauren was begging to go tot he park, but it was just about time to start dinner. Where does the day go?
Jack seems to be doing much better, his nose has dried up and he's just about stopped coughing. His fascination with chapstick continues. Now we're trying to get him to leave it in a certain place in his room so he can always find it, but he invariably wants to carry it around, and then he loses the cap, etc. The good news is that at least now, despite the fact that he says it smells like candy, he's not trying to eat it!Comments:Add a comment:

Music Together was cancelled this morning as the instructor was sick, so I decided to take Jack to the Kidz Club for a craft class. Jack liked the painting part where we dipped the side of his fist and then pressed it on paper to make a flower. Then we cut it out and taped it onto pipe cleaners, or should I say I did most of this, as Jack wandered off to play with the train table. Then after cirlce time there was another project with contact paper and tissue paper which we then cut into hearst shapes, but Jack was having none of it! I thought I would bring them home for Lauren, but then I accidentally left them there. :( Oh well.
I had to pick Lauren up from school a bit late again, but she was happily playing hide and seek when I found her in the sand box area. Then we took what was supposed to be a quick trip to the grocery store. On the way into the store, Lauren asked me why we live in Arbor Greene (the name of our community). I said we liked it, so we decided to live there. She said very decidedly, "But I don't want to live there." So I asked, "Where do you want to live? And without hesitation, she said "California." I have a sneaking suspicion that's because she knows Auntie Tati lives out there, but it came out of the blue and really made me chuckle! Luckily we are planning a trip out there this summer, so she's got that to look forward to.
Once inside the store someone asked me if they were twins. It might have been because they were both dressed in shades of red and white. But when I looked at them sitting there in the truck cart, side by side, I realized - they do look the same size. In fact, sitting down, Jack looks bigger! It's only because of her long legs that Lauren is taller. That feels so funny to me. My little baby looks like a 4 year old! I wonder if we're going to get to a point where people assume he's older?Comments:Add a comment:

Today we went to Lauren's playgroup which was at Thomas and Charlie's house. Lauren and Thomas have a sort of sibling love/hate thing going on. They've been in playgroup for quite a while together and they were in school together last year. Today she said, "Thomas isn't mean to me anymore." I'm glad we went because it was good to see everyone, even though it did make me late for my audition across town. I should have spent the morning preparing and left much, much earlier. When will I ever learn?
Both kids have been asking to play games on the computer on Noggin.com, which I feel OK about because they are reinforcing a lot of the good messages that are in the TV programs. Mike was helping them with it this afternoon, and Lauren seems to be improving on her mouse technique. They do go to computer lab at preschool, so I should find out more about what kind of programs they use and what skills they're working on.
It's very frustrating cooking dinner for those two. There isn't anything that both kids will consistently eat. Lauren is now saying she doesn't like tomato sauce on her pasta, when she's always liked it before. Hmmm, if there's no tomato sauce it's hard to sneak veggies and ground meat in there along with it! I guess you just can't please all of the kids all of the time.Comments:Add a comment:

Tuesday I had to bring Lauren along to Jack's MyGym class because in the rush of the morning, Mike somehow left before I realized he was supposed to stay. Mygym was very gracious and let her join in the class. It went surprisingly well. Jack actually did better than usual in terms of listening and following directions. I think he was either role-modeling after Lauren or trying to show off for her. The lastest amazing thing is the monkey bars where he was skipping rungs and alternating hands, apparently that's something a lot of kids his age don't do yet. Lauren can't even do that yet, but then, he has a lot more upper body strength, he can hold more of his own weight.
I decided that we had time to squeeze in a haircut for Jack on the way home, and I was dismayed to see that our favorite guy David has retired. :( Wah! But Krytsal did an OK job. There's always something I don't like. This time she got the side burns right and I also asked that the bangs not be cut so straight across in the front. But we still have a cowlick situation in the back. The solution is to either keep it very short or grow it longer so it doesn't stick straight up. We tried it short and I didn't like it, he looked like his head was flat back there. So I asked her to leave it long, and she cut it medium so it is sticking up again. Oh well, one of these days we'll get it right!
This morning we hosted playgroup at the park and only 2 people came, which was dissapointing. But there were lots of kids because Pride park is shared by Pride elementary school, so there were a bunch of kindergardeners and 1st graders running around on recess. It's so funny to see Jack running after them. He's almost as big as some of them, but not nearly as agile and sometimes they almost plow him over! I'm trying very hard not to hover. : )
Sara is on vacation so I had to pick Lauren up a half hour late. She was actually happy since she got to play in the huge sand box. Jack was jabbering on about Pride park as we were passing it on the way home, and then Lauren begged me to go there, so I relented since after school hours it's much quieter. There were a few people there at first, but after while we had the whole place to ourselves. It was interesting to how differently Jack plays when Lauren is there. She takes the lead a lot of the time, and most of the time he's happy to follow her. I wonder if that will change when he overtakes her in size - which I think is just a matter of time, (and not too far away!) So I felt like I spent my entire day at that park! But they came home hungry and tired, and that's always a good thing!Comments:Add a comment:

Jack was a real trouper today as Mommy spent the entire morning doing laundry and putting all the clean laundry away. I always feel guilty when we don't at least go for a walk or even get out of the house, but he happily toured his Mack truck all over the house, with little breaks that included playing with the Thomas trains and watching Wow Wow Wubzy on TV, which for some inexplicable reason is his favorite show on Noggin.
Lauren once again didn't seem all that happy to see me when I picked her up from preschool, because I got to her before they headed outside to play. This time I got her out of there quickly because I needed to run some errands. I was starving, so I stopped by this new French Cafe place that's not to far away to grab a sandwich. Big mistake with Lauren in tow! They had all kinds of of cakes and fancy chocolates. She was literally the kid in the candy store with her nose up against the glass cabinets. "Mommy, Mommy, I want choc-late!!!" I relented and bought her one fancy chocolate, but the surprise about that is that she doesn't like hard chocolate like ganache. Oh well, more for me!
I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but we've been having a rat infestation in our roof. Apparently they were nesting in some extra carpet remnants we had in the storage space above our garage. Our pest control has been fairly inept at getting a handle on things. We can't quite figure out how they're getting in there. The problem is that Jack's room is right next to the garage and he hears them scrathching and walking around up there. He thinks there's monsters! And to be honest, it freaks me out to think there's some rodents crawling about overhead with just a little bit of dry-wall between them and us! But I try to stay cool in front of the kids. When Jack ask's "what's that?" I casually say, "Oh it's just some animals on the roof. They're outside." I don't think there's any way they can get into the house, but it creeps me out just the same. I mean if the frogs got into the toilet, there's no telling what can happen!

Just another Saturday, much like any other. Lauren has taken to waking up about 7AM and coming into our room and climbing in for a little snuggle time. It's not long before she's declaring in a very loud bright voice "Wake up, Mommy, it's morning!" So much for lingering in bed. . .I actually managed to stay on pointe and got both kids breafasted, dressed, and out the door on time for ballet, which somehow felt like a major accomplishment! I even remembered the camera because it was parent observation day. I could not coax Mike out of bed due to what seems to be a migraine, so he'll have to wait until her show in May to see her twinkle toes. Lauren got shy and refused to participate in a lot of the class, which sort of surprised me. She had that stubborn look on her face. The real surprise was that Jack was willing to sit there watching quietly for an entire 30 minutes!
It was just beautiful when we got back outside after class, so I took them to a playground on the way home to run off some steam before lunch. Unfortunately I had dressed them entirely too warmly since we got dressed at 7:30 and it was much cooler then and Einstein here didn't look at the weather forecast. I should know that no matter what it seems like, it's always going to be at least 75 degrees! So we didn't last too long at the playground.
Despite all the morning activities, napping was a complete disaster for Jack, probably because I was doing laundry. His room is just behind the laundry room and it does seem to disturb him. I am aware of this, but I'm desperately trying to whittle away at the mountain which just continues to grow each day! He woke up Lauren whith some delighted shreiking all the way from the family room. They both begged to open the new finger paints I just bought, so that was a fun. They exclaim in such wonderful surprise when they discover that, say, red and blue makes purple. It cracks me up! They even both helped clean up their palettes. Then we snuck a short walk to our little playground around the corner before the sun went down.
I actuallly cooked dinner tonight (which seems to be a rare event these days) and Lauren rewarded me with not only trying, but actually eating the pork chops! But Jack was having none of it. Oh well, he ate a lot of rice. And cheese. The boy lives on cheese!Comments:Add a comment:

Wednesday we had Jack's playgroup at the park and the funniest thing was Jack and a few other boys standing at the top of the slide and shouting "ARGH!" and pretending they were on a pirate ship. I guess it's a boy thing. I can't find the big yellow truck Jack got for Christmas, and I have a sneaking suspicion I left it there the last time we were there. it's a mystery.
Yesterday we went to Lauren's playgroup at Christina's house and there were quite a few battles about sharing the trains between my two and also our hosts. They seem much more interested in their trains which are battery operated, but I don't really want to buy another train system. Plus she says she goes through AAA batteries like they're going out of style!
[Later]
OK, I did it. I stopped waffling and I took Lauren out to Hand in Hand Academy (her old school from last year) at their new location. The whole drive out there I kept thinking "I can't beleive I'm considering this drive, 4 times (there and back) 3 times a week! But the moment I got there I could see how they've expanded into the new facilities and I was remembering all the things I liked about the school. They have better teachers, a smaller ratio, an individualized reading program, more parental involvement. It's just a much better school, and I don't think I should put my convenience before the children's education. I know it's just prechool, but it's laying the foundation for how they'll feel about school in the future. Plus we can probably car-pool with Taylor. But most importantly, Lauren seems to really want to go back there. So I filled out the forms and registered them both for the Fall. Phew! I'm so releived to have finally made the decision. Now, of course, we have to get Jack potty trained by August, which is laying down the gauntlet, but I think we can do it. He'll probably have Ms. Lori who was Lauren's teacher, which is great because he knows her already from pick-up time last year. I can't beleive I'm going to have three mornings a week with 2 whole hours to myself! Maybe I'll actually start to exercise, won't that be a concept!
